Is recycling still relevant?

Recycling has always been considered important and as time passes, its role in the environment has more and more value than we might think.

In Mexico, the plastic industry plays a fundamental role in our economic development since its annual economic impact is over 23,400 million dollars, more than 228,000 direct jobs, and 500,000 indirect jobs.

Producers are manufacturing aluminum using high percentages of this recycled material as raw material to demonstrate their environmental credentials and their commitment to this reduction in CO2 emissions.

Our country is a success story regarding the recycling of PET since around 60% of this material that we consume is recovered.

About Riisa

Riisa started operations in 1987 as an aluminum smelting facility. After some years they expanded into other metals such as aluminum, copper, steel, bronze, stainless steel, zinc and plastic. It always satisfies its customers and suppliers by maintaining successful business relationships.

Over time Riisa has grown to get a better infrastructure to keep its materials and work areas in the best conditions.

Riisa expanded to new markets and opened in 2013 a new warehouse in Silao, Guanajuato, around 2014 in Mazatlán, Sinaloa, and four years later the last one in Pachuca, Hidalgo.

The aluminum will be going to replace the plastics?

In recent years, the demand for aluminum has increased and it is expected that it will continue to rise for the next two decades, why? Because it is a lightweight, strong, energy-efficient, and infinitely recyclable material.

Aluminum recycling is a true closed loop. According to the Aluminum Association, it is one of the most recycled materials on the market and it saves more than 90% of the energy required to produce new metal.

When it comes to durability, plastic bottles have an inherent advantage. While dented cans often end up on retailer discount shelves, plastic is less likely to deform in transit.

There are 7 types of plastic that exist in our current modern days:

  • 1 – Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET or PETE or Polyester)
  • 2 – High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE)
  • 3 – Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)
  • 4 – Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE)
  • 5 – Polypropylene (PP)
  • 6 – Polystyrene (PS)
  • 7 – Other.

We can recycle every plastic except the # 7 classification, this category covers a vast mixture of resins and includes food containers (clamshells), polycarbonate used in sports bottles, and bio‐based plastic used in compostable food containers.

How could we incentivize people to recycle?

  • Recycling Programs
  • Volunteering
  • Campaigns
  • Offer any gratification
